Day 6

A wise man once said “Breakfast is everything. The beginning, the first thing. It is the mouthful that is the commitment to a new day, a continuing life”. For the past 5 days, breakfast has been the group’s favorite time as we get the chance to discuss the previous day and our favorite moments with a cup of hot coffee or tea.

Today the first topic that we raised was our visit to Smolyan. People were showing off the magnets and postcards they had bought as a gift for their friends and loudly chit-chatting about the tasty ice-cream they had in the city center. Once the cups were empty we began our first session for the day with Filip, Iluta, Katy, Iliya, and Victor under the name “Teamwork & Cooperation”. They had prepared interesting and mind-provoking games where you had to trust your teammates and have great communication in order to win.

In our second session for the day, after all the team-building activities it was time for us to get more familiar with social innovation. This is the process of developing and deploying effective solutions to challenging and often systemic social and environmental issues. We were presented with a couple of good examples and practices as well as what are their benefits and features. This presentation was the perfect basic ground in order to understand what social innovation and how it differentiates from social entrepreneurship.

After a tasty lunch and a short break, we had our next session dedicated to the presentations of Iluta and Juris. The main ideas of Iluta’s presentation was related to “Fake News” and ways to differentiate them from the true ones. She shared some of her experience as a student of Media Literacy. In the end, she showed us an interesting game from Factitious, which gave us some good examples of fake information. Regarding this theme our trainer, Maya included an example of fake news in the Balkans, which had a famous adult actress circulating Facebook presented as a NASA employee.

The presentation of Juris was about “Global Security Threats”. He touched on examples like the tragedy on 11/9/2001, Al-Qaeda attacks and Boko Haram. This provoked deep discussions and reflection on our own thoughts.Later that day we had part two of the social innovation workshop where we had the pleasure of working together in teams in order to create our own plan dedicated to an important social issue – education, ecology, and poverty. Maya presented us with her thoughts on the topic and how she came up with the idea of the Social Tea House in Varna, a social enterprise, alternative space where you can take part in various events and experience different tastes.
